Fluffy Sheep Pattern

I recently aquired this fluffy, colourful yarn and immediately knew that I wanted to use it to make some sheep. I don’t know what specific kind of yarn it is because it didn’t have a yarn band, but I think it’s Bernat Pipsqueak. It’s very soft and pleasant to touch – which is something I don’t think about a lot of fluffy yarns! The commonly used blanket yarn is particularly off-putting for me, but this one? Very pleasant.
So, I’ve made a couple of these sheep! I’ve been trying to get better at writing out my patterns so I can share them here with you, and this was no exception. It’s a really simple pattern with no fancy stitches at all! The hardest part is just working with fluffy yarn, because it makes it almost impossible to see your stitches and requires a lot of blind faith that you’re sticking your hook in the right spot. That being said, the fluffiness also covers up any mistakes, so it’s pretty forgiving!
Without further ado, let’s get into making some sheep!

Materials

  • Fluffy yarn, such as Bernat Pipsqueak, in colour A (wool colour)
  • Worsted weight acrylic yarn, such as Bernat Premium, in colour B (skin colour)
  • 5mm hook
  • 3.5mm hook
  • Pair of 12mm safety eyes
  • Stuffing
  • Black embroidery thread or yarn

Abbreviations

Sc= single crochet
Inc- increase

Dec= decrease
St(s)= stitch(es)
Dc= double crochet
Sl st- slip stitch
Ch= chain

Steps

Body

Using colour A and 5.0mm hook.
  1. MR 6 sc. [6]
  2. Inc 6. [12]
  3. (Inc, sc) x6. [18]
  4. (Inc, sc 2) x6. [24]
  5. Sc 6 rnds of 24.
  6. (Dec, sc 2) x6. [18]
  7. (Dec, sc) x6. [12]
  8. Stuff until firm but squishy.
  9. Dec 6. [6]
Fasten off. Sew opening shut.

Head Base

Using colour B and 3.5mm hook.
  1. MR 6 sc. [6]
  2. Inc 6. [12]
  3. (Inc, sc) x6. [18]
  4. Sc 3 rnds of 18.
  5. (Dec, sc 4) x3. [15]
  6. Sc 1 rnd of 15.
  7. (Dec, sc 3) x3. [12]
  8. Sc 1 rnd of 12.
  9. Attach safety eyes between rnd 6 and 7, about 4 or 5 sts apart.
  10. Stuff until firm but squishy.
  11. Dec 6. [6]
Fasten off. Sew opening shut.

Ear x2

Using colour B and 3.5mm hook.
  1. MR 6 sc. [6]
  2. Sc 6 rnds of 6.
Fasten off. Stuff with starting tail and sew onto either side of the head, at rnd 11 about 4 sts apart.

Head Wool

Using colour A and 5.0mm hook.
  1. MR 6 sc. [6]
  2. Inc 6. [12]
  3. Sc 2, (dc 4) in next st, sc 8. [14]
  4. Sc 2, turn work. Ch 4, sk 2 st, sc 6, ch 4, sk 2 st, sl st. [2 loops and 6 sc]
Fasten off. Put on head by pulling ears through loops with dc section at the top of the face, and sew in place.
Sew head onto the body at one end, slightly above the centre.

Leg x4

Using colour B and 3.5mm hook.
  1. MR 7 sc. [7]
  2. Sc 3 rnds of 7.
  3. Sc 3, inc, sc 3. [8]
  4. Sc 1 rnd of 8.
Fasten off. Stuff with starting tail. Sew onto bottom of the body, evenly spaced in a square shape.

Tail

Using colour A and 5.0mm hook.
  1. Ch 4.
  2. Sc in 2nd ch from hook and next 2 ch. [3]
Fasten off. Sew onto back of body, slightly above the centre.
Using the black thread or yarn, stitch on a V-shape for the nose with a 3-shape underneath for the mouth, and a curved line over each eye for eyelashes.
